Three months into covid 19, how you going? If
you’re not cutting it, Don’t Stay Stuck. In a time and age where many due to current
challenges of life feel stuck, knowing how to move forward can appear
mystifying. It’s as if you’re being held back. For every one step forward life
seems to be sending you two steps backward, preventing you from pursuing your
dreams. You feel limited and you don’t know what to do or where to start.
You feel you have no idea how to
break free from the current situation you find yourself in. It’s quite scary, dealing with all the challenges being thrown at you. Even though your current situation may appear
hopeless to you, don’t quit, don’t throw in the towel and don’t stay stuck.
Make a decision to create a better life for yourself and those you care about most. In
the words of a dear friend “Your beliefs determine your attitude, your attitude
determines how you feel, how you feel determines how you act and how you act
determines what you gain from life.
Always remember, you are the captain
of your ship and it’s your responsibility to chart your course through all that
life throws at you. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.
Differentiate between
feelings and facts
You feel as if
you’re stuck in life. Therefore, you conclude that you cannot move on.
Sometimes, however, your emotions might not be telling the (entire) truth. The
inability to get unstuck may feel very real, but in the end, it’s just a
feeling. Feelings are created from the stories you tell yourself in your mind and
these very feelings create your perception of the situation.
For this
reason, it’s important to remind yourself that feelings are not facts. They’re
just an aspect of what you’re thinking. Try to look at your situation more
objectively. Emotional responses are a reaction to your feelings that can
cloud your perception of reality. Feeling stuck in life could be a response to
exaggerated expectations or mere fantasies.
Excuses keep us from moving forward in
life. Do not allow excuses to keep you where you say you don’t want to be. Stop
trying to rationalise why you can’t get on with your life. Don’t focus on all
the different reasons that keep you stuck. Shift your attention to what needs
to be done to effect positive change. Believe you can do it, visualise doing it
and then do it. Your attention goes where energy flows. Liberate your mind then
your life will follow.
Be grateful
for what you have
You may feel as if you’re not moving forward when you
think of all the things you’re yet to accomplish in life and all the obstacles
you currently face. As a result, you get frustrated about your situation and
feel as if you’re stuck. Being grateful for what you already have can help ease
the feeling of being stuck. By the thought of gratitude alone, your body
produces two powerful chemicals, dopamine and oxytocin. These can help you rediscover
what is beautiful about your life. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have,
start focusing and being grateful for all you do have. Count your blessings and
be open to receive even more.
Let go
The things that keep you stuck most often lie in the past. If
you want to get your act together, letting go of your thoughts, feelings and
emotions of the past is a great place to start. It doesn’t matter that your
parents weren’t loving, or that your spouse cheated on you. Stand back, let go
of the sadness surrounding it and observe the thoughts of your past for what
they were, an episode of your life which you survived. Make time to celebrate your
progress, understand that you are an overcomer and your best is yet to come.
