Coping With Stress

 


Definition: Stress is simply a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs our physical or mental equilibrium. In other words, it's an omnipresent part of life. A stressful event can trigger the “fight-or-flight” response, causing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol to surge through the body. A little bit of stress, known as “acute stress,” can be exciting—it keeps us active and alert. But long-term, or “chronic stress,” can have detrimental effects on health.  Here are five recommendations to enable you to cope with some of the stressful challenges you may have in your life.

  • Avoid: The things that zap you of your time and energy. Learn to say no, disconnect yourself from the TV, computer and phone, learn how to silence the negative thoughts that pop up in your head. Utilize these suggestions to remove yourself from the stressors in your life.

  • Alter: The things that cause you to stress on a daily basis. Be more assertive, be willing to express your feelings, be realistic, ask for help when needed. Utilise these suggestions to take conscious control of the events and circumstances that are causing you stress.


  • Adapt: To the stressors in your life in order to manage them more effectively. Manage your time, break tasks into smaller steps, clarify goals, delegate tasks and projects. Utilise these suggestions to transform how you respond to stress.
  • Accept: The uncontrollable events and circumstances that cause you stress. Let go of past mistakes and events, people and opinions. Utilize these suggestions to strengthen your resolve when dealing with stressful situations that seem to be out of your control.
  • Adopt: A healthy lifestyle in order to minimise the effects of stress on your body. Regular exercise, quality sleep, take breaks, power naps and healthy food choices. Utilise these suggestions to adopt healthy habits and a lifestyle that will keep you physically fit and emotionally strong for years to come.
