A Random Act Of Kindness

We’re currently living in a day and an age where a Random Act Of Kindness can literally save a life. Here’s a story that highlights this very point.

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods door to door to pay his way through school found himself hungry and thirsty with only one thin dime left to his name. So, he decided he would ask for a meal at the next house he came to. However, when faced with the opportunity he lost his nerve due to a lovely young lady opening the door.

Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk and some cookies. Delighted at the kind gesture he took time to savour the moment, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept payment for an act of kindness.” she said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and humankind was restored. He had been ready to give up and quit. Years later that young lady became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease to see if collectively, they could help her.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town where the young lady came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose from his desk and went down the hall of the hospital room where the young lady lay.

Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognised her at once. This was the very same lady that gave him a glass of milk as a young man selling door to door. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day onward he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle and much research, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly was able to come up with a remedy for his patient. Knowing that there was to be a substantial bill Dr Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the edge of the bill before it got sent to her room.

She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she plucked up enough courage to open it and take a look inside. With the invoice in her hand, something caught her eye on the side of the bill. She began to read the following words:

“Paid in full with one glass of milk.

Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.”

We may never truly know the reach of an act of kindness or the mark it leaves on someone's life. As we go through this week, let us all endevour to engage in a random act of kindness.
