Meditation For Beginners

Meditation For Beginners

Meditation is the practice of developing the awareness of the mind, in order to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state so as to enable an individual personal and spiritual growth.

In spite of what you may have heard, meditation does not involve joining a group, paying any fees, wearing any special clothing, sitting in any funny positions or believing in anything in particular. It is simply a validated exercise for your brain.

A few tips to help you get started

1. Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight, but don’t be rigid, your head should be as if it was being lifted up away from the weight of the world. Your hands should be in a balanced position mirroring each other and your eyes should be closed.

2.  Notice the feeling of your breath coming in and going out. Pick a spot where it is most prominent, usually, that's your nose, chest or belly and just focus your full attention on the feeling of your breath coming in and going out.

3. During the process you may notice being distracted by your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, that’s ok the key here is to notice when you find yourself being distracted and bring yourself back to your breathing and start over again. Repeat over and over again until the distractions become fewer and your ability to deal with them becomes better.

4. This practice is like performing a bicep curl for your brain. You will find yourself building muscle memory and forming new habits. The more you practice the easier it will become. Meditation is unlike anything you do in your life, failure is actually success. You try, you fail, you start again, you fail, you start again. You try, you fail, you start again and before you know it, you will find yourself spending increasingly longer in your state of meditation.

My advice to you would be to attempt to meditate between 5 and 10 minutes every day. It truly does not require a giant investment of time just 5 to 10 minutes daily and in return, you’ll notice a big difference in your life.

Successful meditation should have a process that is adhered to, to enable a positive outcome. Just like taking a shower, you remove your clothes before stepping into, you set the temperature of the water, you wet your body before applying soap. Your meditation practice should be no different.

Benefits of successful meditation:

Increase in positive emotions, compassion, immune function, control over emotions and ability to focus.

Decrease in anxiety, stress, pain, feelings of loneliness and depression.
