The compound effect has been described
by some as the Eighth wonder of the world and in order to give it justice allow
me to share this scenario with you.
I
would like you to imagine being offered the following. Put in 30 minutes a day,
every day to push your skills and show improvement in your abilities and at the
end of the week you'd get $10 with a 10% raise at the end of each week if you
consistently put in the time day after day after day.
Or on
the other hand you’re offered $5,000 a week to put in the same amount of time
but you don't have to do it on a consistent basis. There's no need to improve
your skills, you can just use your existing skill set. Now, which would you
take? Option A or option B? To assist you in your decision making let me share
with you how things would look like after 12 months.
It has been said, “The race is not for the swift, but for those who can
endure." It’s at this point that the majority might be patting themselves
on the back for taking option B and the minority who chose option A would be in
line for a bit of stick like “Are you stupid, why would you put yourself
through all that for so little.” It’s not until the bigger picture is revealed,
will the scales begin to come off the eyes of the majority for them to turn
around and wish that they had taken the long-haul approach. Let’s look at the
same scenario after 24 months.
Being part of the rat race with a
microwave mentality which demands instant gratification and instant results
only leads to instant heartache and long-term pain. In order to stay true to The Compound Effect, we need to stay
true to our core values, our guiding compass and GPS.
They act as the filter from which we
run all life’s demands, requests and temptations. Making sure they’re leading
us towards our intended destination. Getting our core values defined and
properly calibrated is one of the most important steps we can take in
redirecting our life towards our grandest vision.
