I think it
fair to say that we’ve all been impacted by the coronavirus in one way, shape or
form. For many daily routines will never be the same again. However, this
perceived crisis may just provide the needed opportunity to improve family life
for the better.
On the one hand
you can look at all the negative consequences that many are experiencing
because of the coronavirus. Loss of family members and loved ones, financial insecurity,
the closure of your favourite stores, having to queue up to purchase food and
basic essentials, social distancing, wearing of masks the list goes on.
However, on the other hand, we’ve all been given a once in a lifetime
opportunity to change the way we do what we do for the better. Think of the
average family with 2.2 kids with working parents. An ordinary week can easily
resemble organise chaos with the race to get the kids to school on time, dodgems
on the tube system, skipping lunch to finish early only to repeat the morning
madness and be rewarded with a microwave dinner.
We all yearn for more quality time to do the things we say we would love
to do. And just like magic, many have been given the opportunity to spend
extended time at home with their entire family. Is it working out like a bed of
roses? Not for all but with a concerted effort we all have the opportunity to
make it work.
As we begin to relearn and develop a better understanding of what family
life can be like, we discover that there’s no rule that says we have to have
everything figured out right now. Every step forward is progress and a step in
the right direction. With each new day, brings a brighter way to manage all the
challenges that family life brings.
In changing the way we look at things, the things we look at change. We develop
a healthy appreciation for teachers, NHS staff, and all front line workers irrespective
of their race colour or creed. And in doing so we make the world a better place,
not just for our children but our children’s children.
