Just when
you thought things couldn’t get any worse, enter the Coronavirus with all its
implications. As the forced lockdown begins to register the numbers of those
suffering from stress and anxiety creeps up. A study commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation found that 74% of
the UK were overwhelmed or unable to cope at some point during 2018, which
makes you wonder what the landscape looks like now.
How do you know when you're
approaching the stress danger zone and what can you do about it? Before we go
any further let’s take a look at what stress is. At the most, basic level stress
is our body’s response to mental or emotional pressure from a situation or life
event. Hormones and chemicals are released
that prepare us for the physical action of fight or flight that enables us to
respond quickly to any dangerous situation.
What are the signs that you’re unhealthily
stressed?
Overworking and stress may manifest
in a range of ways for everyone, but there are key tell-tale signs.
- Chronic tiredness
- Weight or mood changes
- Persistent cravings for very sweet or salty
foods
- Mental fog or confusion
- Frequent illnesses such as getting lots of colds or bacterial infections and insomnia
What
first steps can you take if you’re feeling overworked and stressed?
Here’s
a useful acronym to get started.
RELAX
Recognise that you are stressed and commit to taking action.
Exercise/Eating – Exercise to divert your thoughts, release tension and negative
emotions that come with stress. Eat healthily to build your immune system and increase
your energy levels.
Letting
Go – Separate the necessary from the unnecessary. Always
remember that your challenges are temporary and will pass, nothing is permanent.
Attitude – Your attitude determines your altitude. It influences every part of your
life–self-image, relationships, business, and even your health. Learn
to work from your power and not your pain. Kick your ego into touch and be
prepared to ask and receive help.
Xtra
Sleep – Sleep
renews and regenerates the mind and body. When you don’t get enough sleep, you
are going to have little energy and will also have reduced mental acuity. So,
make sure you gain enough sleep each day.
