Learning to love self is easier said than done.
From the cradle to the grave, much of what we truly deserve and need to live an
abundant life is denied us through lack of self-love. This is neither taught in schools and not passed down from our forebears, but we are born with it as
babies and use it to get exactly what we want and need. But we begin to lose it once we become self-aware. Therefore, we should not be too surprised
that learning to love self can be oftentimes an uphill struggle.
The truth is that when you start the journey of learning to love self and practicing self-love, you can very quickly find yourself becoming a social outcast. You stick out. You stop fitting in. You cease being part of the misery-loves-company brigade, and group hug for a pity party fraternity. Instead, you become aware of your choices, you’ll understand to bring about change you’ll have to change. And as you commence the changes, on the journey of learning to love self, you soon become aware of what you’re leaving behind, and the challenges faced by those you’ve left behind.
Once you reconcile where you’ve come from and where the average person still is, you’ll be better equipped to deal with the negativity they may have towards you. If there is any lesson you can take away from the way people treat you, it is this: their actions often mirror how they treat themselves and is a reflection of their own self-limiting beliefs.
Learning to love self brings balance mentally, physically and spiritually. It also comes with many benefits like:
- More tolerance of your flaws and weaknesses.
- More self-confidence and more self-forgiving.
- Healthier mindset and less self-sabotaging thoughts.
- Improved ability to discover and fulfill your personal destiny.
- Increased love, acceptance, and compassion for yourself and others.
- Improved relationships, friendships and work life.
Self-love, self-respect, self-worth. There is a reason they all start
with “self.” You cannot find them in anyone else. You are a unique one of one.
Learning to love self is definitely about the
journey and not the destination. There will be much unlearning to do,
which may bring on anxiety, stress or even a hint of
depression. But the journey of self-love is worth it, so stay tuned
till next week to discover a positive way forward.
